And, If I Had Said Yes Right Away, I Would’ve Had A Gig In March

I check my cell and see someone has left a text message. It’s from the owner of a local sushi place and it says, “I’m booking for the season can you do Saturdays?”

I want to say yes immediately but I have been playing piano Saturday afternoons for a seafood bar and grille so the ethical thing to do is text the fish place’s entertainment manager and ask, ” Are you planning to use me this season? If you are, can I switch from Saturdays to Fridays? I have an offer from another venue but I wanted to clear it with you first. I won’t respond to the request till I hear from you.”

I put off two or three texts from Mr. Sushi and wait for an answer from the bar and grille. I wait almost 3 hours to receive a text stating, “Go ahead and take that gig. I’m going to use Will and Linda on Saturdays (and Fridays) starting next month (February-a full month before season starts). I’ll let you know if another day comes up.”

My return text says, “Thanks.”

I tell Mr. Sushi I can take Saturdays and he says,”Cool. You can start in April. Had to book some one else for March while we were waiting for your answer.”

“Jeez,” I thought. “If I hadn’t been offered the gig in January, I would’ve had to wait another month to find out I’d already been fired.”
