I Got In My Car And Drove Straight To The Mornin’ Meetin’

Well, another school year is startin’ for Joey and, though he’s returnin’ to Saint Mary’s after attendin’ public elementary school for a year (that’s a long storyI should’ve blogged about in real time), his mama’s still the same.

Joey had asked me to pick him up and take him to school today. “Coz it’s tradition,” he said. “You taking me to school.”

I had called several times yesterday to make sure things were still a go but, as per usual when Joey’s Ma is in charge of the phone, no answer, no return call and no text response. That’s why I went to Saint Mary’s website and made sure their classes started today. The site said, “School in session: 8am.”

I was knockin’ at J-Ma’s door at 7 this morning. And I was still knockin’ at 7:15 when she finally answered. She opened the door and, in a groggy voice, said,”Joey’s not going to school till Monday. His uniforms hadn’t come in. I was wonderin’…Y’know Dad’s in the hospital, having tests this morning, so I don’t want to bother him..the office at Saint Mary’s said something about unpaid back tuition from a couple of years ago…and I hope they still let Joey go to school…I was supposed to meet with them yesterday…could you, would you…”

“I’ll drop by the office and find out.”

“Thanks. And she, the lady at the front desk asked something about Joey’s uniform. If I was going to make sure he dressed to code…then she said something about used Saint Mary’s clothes being avail…”

“I’ll check on that, too>”

“Thanks,” she said. “I’ll have Joey call you…later.”
